Compass Cuties

Mav and I love our church.  Here is the true story of why we started going there.  I received a postcard about a new church in town, but we had a church, so I recycled it.  Then I got another one.  I recycled it also, but noticed the location.
There is something very 'Mayberry' about living near a Main St. that appeals to me, so when I realized the church was on our Main St.- and in a beautiful old church building we just had to go.  I told Mav "think how cute our family will look attending there!" (God used my vanity.)  That's it.   It's been years now and I can tell you it is one of the best decisions we've ever made.
I started another blog related to the time I spent leading their children's ministry. You can check it out here.
I also am adding a couple of photos so you can see the building.  The one with our girls in front was three years ago and Mav designed the banner.  You can see I was right our family looks cute there!

Beyond Flat Boxes

Recently the girls and I loaded up our babies and headed to Ikea.  Why on earth would I check them into
'smaland'  when as you can see that is not where the fun is?!  I must add we were able to have a great time without disturbing other shoppers or causing the employees to cringe.  It will definitely be added to our list of rainy day activities.  (We live in the northwest so we need a bundle of them!)  I know opinions about Ikea can go either way, but I will admit I love it.  My dreams of organization are fueled!  I think my husband could gladly live the rest of his life never returning.  What can I say?  I'm a cheap date.

7:34am

Here is Life in the Pink House at 7:34am.

I can't bring myself to leave you with that picture of me so here is the finished product.

I absolutely love those curlers.  I don't know what they are called but they are the perfect blend of a sponge curler and setting your hair in rags.  My curls last 3 days.

Little Pink School House an Overview

Here is a peek into Homecoolin' in the Pink House.  I have received a few requests to talk about this more.  If a picture is worth a thousand words this will give you a pretty good idea of what school looks like for us.  In upcoming posts I will touch on this subject more.  If you have specific questions or curiosities please ask!

The Other Side of the Coin

Bellisimama presented me with this sweet little award.  She is always fun to peek in on and see what has inspired her outfit of the day.  So I guess I tell you 10 things about myself then pass this on.  Here we go... Oh and because it seems I have a tendency to only show myself in a good light I am going to share 10 things that aren't so great about me.
  1. I spend too much time here.
  2. I don't always recycle.
  3. My swear word of choice is the F word.
  4. I don't answer the phone.
  5. I yell and have been known to throw things when I get angry.
  6. I get angry more than I'd like.
  7. My postpartum needs medicating or I would kill myself. literally.
  8. I use paper instead of cloth.
  9. My last 3 babies have been bottle fed.
  10. I do not lie.  (I know that's not bad but I thought you should know.)
I am supposed to pass this on now.  I have to say this feels a little chain mail-ish and I wasn't sure I was gonna play along.  (What do you think of it?)  Regardless,  I am passing it to Miss Lottie Lou  because she is a truly a sugar doll.
Oh and to keep it real here is a photo of me this morning as I write this post.  Yep, that's yesterday's makeup.

Life in the Pink Tower: They Are Watching You

I love that I felt like I was living in some of my favorite children's books this week.  You can see Grace is slightly annoyed I am bothering her by taking a picture as she washes clothes, a favorite nice weather activity.

Not only was I reminded of the books but also some of my favorite quotes.  I'll leave you with them here.

Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.  ~Robert Fulghum

Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.
-Maria Montessori

Be careful little feet where you go, because the little feet behind you are sure to follow.

Hoarder of Clothing

I know that materialism in excess breeds discontentment and fosters ingratitude.  I also live in a small home with 4 children.  So why on earth is it I cannot seem to get the girls clothing under control?!  They have a large closet and 2 dressers bursting at the seams.  Creating chaos when it's time to get dressed.  These are just the clothes my 5 and 6 year old fit into right now.  I also have several large storage bins full of clothes for them to grow into, not to mention the bins of clothing they have grown out of.  I really struggle with this and I promise within the last month alone I gave away several bags of their clothing.  It's like their clothes are rabbits and multiply.  My problem lies in the fact so many of the clothes are wonderful.   There aren't any clothes they can't wear whenever they want.  I don't believe in special occasion dresses, every day is special.   Maybe because they totally dress and pick out their own clothing it ends up they wear only a handful of their favorites.  Then there are my favorites I keep in the mix hoping they might chose.  Anyway bottom line is something had to be done.  So we did it.  I set out all their tops and bottoms.  (first pic)  There were over 120 tops alone!  The last photo is what we got it down to.  Amazing!  I have to tell you it panics me and I want to go out to the garage and bring just a "few" things back in.  The fact I haven't actually gotten rid of them is a security-but I know I have to.  SOON!  I also show a photo of the bin I packed to store away for Dotty and the pile to give away.  In the give away pile alone are 6 swimsuits,  2 dresses,  23 pairs of pants, 13 pairs of pajama's and 45 tops.    Next up the shoes and closet.  Baby steps.

Paper Dolls, Barbie, and the Pin Up

Did you know I own a tattoo shop?  I do.  Deluxe Tattoo Parlor.  Truth is I have very little to do with it, my husband, Mav, is the one who runs it.  When I was in high school I wanted to become a tattooer.  The problem is I don't like touching people, or having a job.  So instead I married one.

Our girls do not think of tattoos as anything odd or different.  They spend a fair amount of time at the shop and they always pick out a tattoo.  They choose from the flash, find the tracing, make a stencil and put it on.  Often times they go over it with a tattoo machine-sans needle.  Sometimes one of the guys at the shop "tattoo" them in this way.  Cartoon characters are the top choice followed closely by mermaids.

A lot of people ask if we are going to let our children get tattooed.  No,  I will not let my children be tattooed,  not as "children." Once they are grown of course they can make their own decisions.  I have the hope they will rebel against us-the establishment, and not get tattooed.

This has given the girls a unique perspective in imagery.  Lots of dragons, swallows, skulls, pinups, daggers, koi fish etc... and I often wonder how it will play out in their lives.   I have a hint of what it might look like with my niece.  She also had a lot of exposure to tattoo arts beginning at a very young age..  Here she is photographed by my daughter Ruth.  See a correlation?

Are pinups my children's version of Barbie dolls?  I think maybe.  We do try to counter this and create healthy body image.  Raising young girls I can tell you it isn't easy.  I also know if we looked at Mav's art since having his first little girl we would notice a more modest approach to pinups.

Vintage Scramble

I loved starring in Solanah's blog recently.  I was flattered and complimented- not only by her but also everyone's sweet comments.  A lot of her readers wanted to know what happened to the sailor dress.  This gave me the idea of putting together photos of me in the dresses and showing where they are now.
If you saw/remember her blog you may notice I didn't do all the dresses, some are still in my current rotation.  Others as you know belong to Solanah and a couple to my oldest, Ruth.  The one that got away, I have no idea where, was the red polka dot dress.  I also added a few others to the mix.
So have fun and see if you can match the dresses.  All of the dresses I am pictured in have a match-except for one.
Do you recognize Miss Vixen Vintage herself in the group of little girls?  You can see she was just as photogenic at 10 years old.   (I let them have those dresses to play in!)
That reminds me that particular photo was taken at her birthday party and today IS her birthday.  Perfect.  Happy Birthday Solanah!

Life in the Pink Tower: Infant Space

As I have mentioned, our home is small.  Our babies have never had a nursery.  Instead they 'bunk' in our room and we create a space for them in our main living space- the living room.  This area is prepared for baby to use right from the start.  We have a low shelf, with very few select objects seen above.  Each one has it's space and is always returned to it.  Baby will be very satisfied to one day be able to get for herself the object she has known since she was born.  It creates an inner determination for movement and shows we respect her timetable for such achievements of her own effort.
We place a quilt and lambskin on the floor to give her freedom of movement and development which can be restricted by too much time in car seats, swings, bouncy seats etc... Above her we place a 'musina toy hanger'.  I remember how proud her sisters were of her the day she reached for and grabbed one of the hanging toys.  To me this is the most important toy my babies have.  We use it right from the start and are still using it now that she is sitting up.  I think it gave her a whole new perspective.  The one we have was pricey and I understand it may not be an option for everyone.  But I found this one very reasonably priced at Ikea.  Had it been available I may have purchased it instead.  (you can also purchase a lambskin at Ikea)
Here is another option that can easily be found at garage sales.  I actually had one of these with my first baby.   The down side of this one is it is plastic and usually comes with some sort of character marketing, I think this one is Sasame Street.  But I still don't rule it out as an option.
Remember that contrary to popular belief, too much-either color or stuff, actually over stimulates and can irritate baby.  They are always taking everything in without filters.   Everything naturally is new and exciting to her.  That is why babies need so much sleep to process all they take in while awake.  So try not to worry about choosing a theme for the nursery.  Choose one if you want, but remember it is more for you than her.  As any mama can tell you their baby's face lights up the most at the sight of YOU.
Last but definitely not least is the wall mirror.  It needs to be acrylic with smooth edges.

A note about the lamb on top: she is vintage and I couldn't help myself from putting her out.  But I won't be able to let baby play with her because she more than likely is toxic.  Please remember that when you have a vintage toy for your children.  It is best to wait until they are well past the put in the mouth stage, maybe 4 years old.
Another note about having baby in your main living space:  If you have the TV on be mindful of what she hears.  To her they are real and tones can be frightening,  remember she has no filters.

Expo Buys

Mav, Dotty and I caught the last few hours of the Portland antique expo this afternoon.  It was like a date, except for Dotty and well the fact Mav and I weren't together half of the time.  I want to do a quick run through then go back and shop.  Mav can spend an hour in one booth of ephemera.  I get impatient.  But it is fun and we run into each other and I show him the things I like and he buys them for me.  Perfect.  Above are those things.
I absolutely love the first dress.  I bought both dresses at Time Was vintage.  Their clothing and prices are fabulous.  Next you see a sampler- perfect for my post Musical Bedrooms.  The Bunnykins plate I couldn't resist because the mama is rolling out pie crusts. ( If you only knew how many photos I have of our family and rolling pins.)
Mav surprised me with the bracelet on our way home.  He is a hopeless romantic and bought it because it was green with yellow flecks like my eyes.  He's the best.
Not pictured is a birthday gift for Solanah.  Shhhh.
Speaking of Vixen Vintage, I was recognized from her blog while out at expo and got to meet the darling Brooksie.

Musical Bedrooms

You have to know I LOVE my pink house.  But...it is snug with our family of six.  1200 square feet, 2 official bedrooms, an additional basement room which tries to sneak in as a bedroom, and 1 bathroom.  Yes, 1.  4 daughters, one small bathroom.  It is funny to me how for some this could never do.  Yet just a few years ago that was the norm.  That is why many of us who live in older homes (ours is 1916) have a single bathroom.  Families certainly weren't smaller then.
I have been tempted to "buy up".  But truthfully I would rather make this work.  I replicate an era I missed in so many ways, what is one more?
However you label it "Vintage" lifestyle or living "Sustainably" we are going to make this pink house fit.  So I am constantly rearranging, hoping to discover more square footage.  This is one of those times.

Before Dotty was born I decided Mav and I would move into our oldest daughter's basement room, she would move into the room shared by Pearl and Grace, which is the smallest- and they would move into the room left vacant by Mav and I.  We did that.  Now after several months and a new baby, I decided to switch it all up again.  Mav and I are going back to our original bedroom- the one with the wallpaper I love that he once hung for me.  Here are some work in progress photos.  I hope to share the finished ones soon.   We did take a break to day and get out in the sunshine as you can see by a couple photos.  Doesn't Grace have wonderful style?
